———-
After the “tremendous success of its European tour,” a traveling circus troupe arrives in a small Pannonian town, promising the locals a “fantastic attraction” — “the world’s largest giant whale.” The carcass of the leviathan soon proves to be merely a backdrop for a spectacle orchestrated by the Prince, an entity of “invisible monstrosity,” and carried out through a ghostly, silent mob.
Amid widespread confusion, fear, and social collapse, the militant Mrs. Eszter sees an opportunity to seize control of a new order in the town, while her husband, “the most disappointed man of all,” finds a reason to emerge from years of self-imposed isolation.
At the tender heart of the novel stands János Valuska, “with the incurable beauty of a personal cosmos in his soul,” a “prisoner of the starry sky, in whose terrifying distance” he searches, with Prince Myshkin-like eyes, for “flickering sparks.”
Over everything hangs an apocalyptic, unrelenting cold, a cold so pervasive that it seems not even snow is permitted to whiten the world.
